Where can I find a list of *legitimate* web directories to add my website to?

I want to grow my site and improve it’s ranking but I don’t know which directories are real and which ones are link farms. I don’t want to be banned by the search engines. I only want to use free ones, and only ones that won’t get me banned. Also, what is the best free submission service? Any advice on how else to improve my rankings and popularity? Thanks!
