What "program" is most reliable for removing "duplicated" files on a PC?
I need to "safely" remove or locate all "duplicated" files on my computer after recently running "file transfer wizard". I transferred my important files for study from my laptop running Windows XP Pro to our desktop running Vista Home Basic. Now I am finding several of the same file in various places all over! Is there a program I can use to "safely" remove all duplicated files? And I specify "SAFELY" because I don’t want to eliminate files that have similar names but not the same content.

  1. I use Directory Report to find my duplicate files

Directory Report can find duplicates based on the same:
Name, Size, CRC (32 bit hash) and/or comparing byte by byte

The most accurate method is comparing byte by byte – but it is the slowest

There is a very small chance that a 32bit CRC will falsely report two files as identical when they are really different

The CRC-32 is used by WinZip and WinRAR to verify that files are unzipped correctly

Just in case, Directory Report lets you binarily compare files in the result screen

To be even safer – you should delete the files to the recyle bin, rather than deleting them permanently

To be even safer – don’t delete any program files (DLLs, EXEs).
