What are the best ways to SEO for free?

Written by General Seo on Nov 29th, 2010 | Filed under: Backlinks

The company I work for has built their audience naturally. No backlinks, reciprocal link exchanges or anything of that sort. They have been around for more than 10 years, yet only have a PageRank of 3. Monthly visitors to the site are over 1.6 million, so it kind of boggles my mind why their PageRank is so low.

We do not have a marketing manager, and I have been asked to build our PageRank even though I have no marketing or computer programming experience. I have been given no authorization for purchasing, so these tactics would have to be for free.

Any great suggestions from experienced webmasters would help be appreciated. Feel free to email me with any suggestions if you do not want to answer publicly. Thanks in advance.

  1. PageRank is a measurement of your link popularity, more PR pages backlinks you have, higher your pagerank will be. It doesn’t really matter how old the site is, unless you have backlinks, you will not have higher PR or any PR at all.

If you are focused on increasing your pagerank, then your focus will be on getting high PR backlinks. There are plenty of free link building methods out there which will not cost you a dime but getting backlinks form PR pages will either require a lot of work or a lot of money. No site will give you a backlink form PR pages without getting paid. If your site is an informative non-profit site, then you might contact some other site owners who might be willing to give you a backlinks. Aside from that, you can find blogposts with pageranks where you can submit relevant comments. Make sire the blog is dofollow or dont have rel="nofollow" attribute added to external links otherwise you will not get an link juice.

If you have a long term goal on increasing pagerank, then you can start working on your link building slowly and over time you will see a difference. You can find some popular and useful link building methods in the article below:

  2. I have a question so I can try and understand how to help you.

Where did you get your page rank information?

    This is important.

    Thanks.

Yes, I use to dabble in websites and I am not to familiar with the website you used to check your page rank with.

But two things to consider here, one is every website has a ranking and then two each individual page in a website has a page ranking.

Which is what it sounds like you are referring to.

I personally think that website ranking is alot more important than any individual page rank. Website rankings through websites like Alexa are of the entire web. One reason inparticular is because the higher your website ranking is the more you can charge for advertizing and the more your website is deemed to be worth.

There are other advantages of having a good pagerank as well. (see the first link below.)

Too get an idea of what you websites ranking is you might want to run a check through http://www.alexa.com this is one of the biggest website ranking sites.

(See the second link below for some information on how to raise the ranking/rating of your website through Alexa.)

The reason I asked the question at first is because most of these website ranking sites gather their information through users of their tool-bars or software.

And to me there isn’t much you can do about how end-users search the web.

As far as an individual page ranking on your website this has more to do with what pages on your website are being visited the most for a given time period. So one advantage here is it is a more comprehensive look at your websites traffic.

Anyway I hope this information helps.

And if you get a chance let me know what your websites ranking is on Alexa.

    I’m curious.

  3. PageRank has "nothing" to do with the amount of traffic you get.. Zip, zero, nadda..

The google toolbar pagerank that you checked is a tiny snapshot of how many links the site had pointing to it the last time google did a public pagerank update..

That said, if the site really has 1.6million monthly visitors you should be able to hire a professional SEO/Marketer to take the site to the next level, if that’s even possible rather than try to DYI and run the risk of doing something stupid and blowing the whole thing up..
