My has my website suddenly dropped?

Written by General Seo on Jun 30th, 2011 | Filed under: Backlinks

I do SEO for 5 different clients, all of them are either top for their keywords or at least on the first page. I study SEO all the time and would like to think I know what I am doing.

One of clients wanted me to optimise his car website for ‘VAG Tuning and Styling’ in the UK, and for ‘VAG Tuning’. Now for the keywords ‘VAG Tuning and Styling’ I got his website to number 2 in Google.

‘VAG Tuning’ was proving more difficult as it was much more competitive. I located the website on page 9 for that keyword and started building backlinks soley for ‘VAG Tuning’. The website climbed to page 4 after a couple of weeks then suddenly one it disappeared!

I looked every where and found it on page 19!….then a couple of days after it was on page 21, then 23 but only for the keyword ‘VAG Tuning’. The other keywords I optimised him for he was still in the same strong positions.

I should point out that I only do ethical SEO and never try any black hat techniques. I asked my client has he had any server issues, has any one else been making changes behind the site which have upset Google but he assures me hasn’t.

I am at a loss as how it could drop so dramatically for one keyword but be fine or all the others. My other SEO clients all have multiple keywords ranking well and I’ve never had this situation before. When I study the website (www.cthtuning.co.uk) off page, on page and behind the scenes I see no reason why it went from page 4 to page 23 in a couple of days.

Could anyone offer any advice or what they think caused it? Be much appreciated.

Thank you

  1. What happened is Google punished you because you were probably using Black Hat SEO (possibly by accident without knowing you were using a banned technique).

When in doubt use the SEO Checklist. It contains a list of what is good White Hat SEO and what things are banned Black Hat SEO.

  2. This sounds very frustrating.
here are a few things to research:
    - Webmaster tools
    - Google Analytics – did you have (while link number 4) a high bounce rate? Google will push you down drastically if the bounce rate "tells them" the keywords is wrong for your web site. I lost a keyword in 1 day. the Only 5 people that visited the web site bounced out and Google "marked it" as incorrect!
    - Did you get a link from a bad neighborhood?
    - Did the drop happen when Panda rolled out?

  3. if you know Google Update Again 10 June 2011 Panda 2.2

and you did something wrong Black Hate SEO

    ya fast build back link

that’s why ranking drown after Update panda 2.2

    Thank you

  4. The most probable scenario is that you performed black hat seo techniques and that is causing your website ranking to drop. Try analysing it again to see where you went wrong.

  5. Thomas, I looked at your site and how it ranks here in California, your term ‘VAG Tuning’ ranks at #168 for me here in the US. Your problem is simple: there is not enough on-page content to keep Google happy. I would create a page on the site called VAG-Tuning and set up the title tag, the description tag, the meta keyword tag (less important these days, but use only VAG Tuning in your keyword tag) make sure there is an H1 tag with VAG Tuning, a few H2 tags with the same keyword in it, and a good article that is 100% unique and on topic on the page. The trick is how to keep your conversion rate up. You could try and put the article below your graphics and see how it works, knowing that you may need to position the article content higher on the page if you still don’t rank well. My guess is that when Google launched the Panda update, you lost your position because it was only ranked well due to "off page" factors. Creating a highly targeted page should get you back in the game and if you have quality back links, you should be on top! Good luck.
