if bookmarking sites (like reddit/digg) are non-niche specific, won't they hurt my site ranking and why?

lets say i create a site about dogs and use bookmark to digg or reddit which is not niche specific. i understand that getting quality back links is critical. would digg and reddit be considered quality backlinks even though they are not niche specific? could they hurt my ranking because they are niche specific?

    I don’t take so.
    As long as you have constant updates to your blog you will get backlinks from them. Don’t be spammy or anything.

    I use digg and reddit all the time
    I also use stumbleupon
