Copyright a website design/layout?

Written by General Seo on Mar 31st, 2010 | Filed under: Duplicate Content

I want to basically duplicate the look/layout of a site, but change the colors, type of content, and logo. Can websites copyright their layouts? The layout is in no way their logo or does it appear to be their logo, it’s just a regular layout.
I wouldn’t actually copy the layout…I have created the tables from scratch (it is highly likely that the table structure is completely different), created the stylesheets from scratch, my own colors from scratch, and my own graphics from scratch…Nothing would be coming from the other site, but it would look similar to it…

Well, like I said, not one image/color, or anything would be coming from their site. It’s a mimic of their site.

  1. By copyright law, everything posted on the Internet is automatically protected by copyright laws, even if the person posting the information on the internet does not specify the item to be copyrighted such as articles, pictures, etc.

Using someones web design to be used as a template to create your own is acceptable, as long as you don’t copy their images and claim them as yours, or use them on your site without written permission from the owner of the graphics.

  2. if it dosent have the copyright sign you can use it pretendin to be yours

  3. there is copyright on the work by virtue of the fact that they created it so if you used it by just copying it then then that would be stealing.

    BUT…..

if you created your own design using that page as a design reference then that would be ok.

Change colours, Change icons, try to change fonts if they are any thing special

  4. it would be a lot easier to just design your own layout so to avoid any copyright infringement. but you could always link back to the original site that "inspired" your layout.

  5. Actually no matter what it is. Everything is kinda copyrighted.

    Take a look at this.
    http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/
If it does not contradict with any of these license stated, then i suppose you could.
