Do you agree with changing social security into welfare program?

Written by General Seo on Aug 26th, 2010 | Filed under: Link Popularity

Obama will raise the social security tax over the 102,000 base. However, the maximum benefit is calculated at the maximum USD 102,000. In this case, you are buying more expensive insurance or pension plan but you don’t get extra pay-outs or benefit for the increased premium.

I did research on WSJ and why Franklin Roosevelt created Social security, it’s meant to be a pension program based on personal contribution, not a welfare.

"The fundamental principle of linking taxes and benefits was established when Roosevelt designed Social Security. He wanted to make sure that it was not a welfare system, calling Social Security "a base upon which each one of our citizens may build his individual security through his own individual efforts." His instincts have generally proved sound. Had Social Security been considered "welfare" rather than a return on taxes earned, it probably would never have had the popularity or the staying power that it has enjoyed for the last seven decades"
why this become a welfare program?

Simple. Currently, the most people can contribute to Social Security is 6.4% of the maxium 104,000 salary. That’s around ,500 per year.

With this ,500 contribution, when you hit 69, you are eligible for ,053 maximum benefit.

Now, some people will pay alot more that ,500. Say, a business owner in a good year can pay say 0,000 per year on social security (or more), but when he hits 69, he will only receive maximum 53 per month.

In this case, he subsidized population without anything in return, which in essence, a welfare program.
when I say now, I mean under Obama’s plan.

Also, the social security wage is 102,000 (not 104,000 – it’s a typo there)

Photographers: About all those "do you think I can model" questions?

Written by General Seo on Aug 26th, 2010 | Filed under: Link Popularity

I’ve been using Y!A for a few years now, and have noted the popularity of the "Do you think I can model" question. Usually it’s asked in the Other- Beauty/Style category, but now that I’ve been frequenting Photography, I’ve seen it posted here more than a few times, as well.

Tell me the truth- Have you ever seen the links included in such a question and actually thought the asker COULD be a model?

I worked as a booker in a NYC agency for a while… We represented models mostly for high-fashion work in print… I know what kind of material I could make money with… Hate to put it that way, but for a booker that’s what it’s about… and I have never seen anyone post a photo on this site and thought, "Wow, that’s a model"… Seen some pretty people, but no models.

How about you?

How do i translate this into Bahasa Malaysia?

The main structure, which contains a main hall, ticket counters and offices, is primarily designed in a "Raj" styling, mixture of Western and Mughal similar to Moorish Revival or Indo-Saracenic architecture, which enjoyed brief popularity in late-19th century and early 20th century colonial India, as well as Europe and the. Dominated by horseshoe and ogee arches, and large chhatris (six originally, with two added later) at the corners of the building accompanying smaller variations at the front, the station is comparable to the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and surrounding structures constructed around the Merdeka Square during the period. In addition to the main station building, a three-storey addition at the north wing was added early in its operation, adopting Westernised vernacular designs with surrounding venrendahs and segmental arches of various widths. The facade of the station is completely plastered, as opposed to buildings of similar styles that opt for exposed brickwork, and painted in light colours (usually white or cream) throughout its service.

The platforms are covered by large steel-framed shelters, which were initially shorter during the station’s early operation. The roofs were originally glazed, and were partially opened to allow smoke from steam locomotives to escape; corrugated roof sheets served as replacements later in the station’s life. The sides of the platforms not adjoining the main building are surrounded by walls constructed in the same style as the main building. The platforms and main building are linked to each other via two underground passageways.

The design of the extended platform for the 1986 refurbishment of the station took a more modernist approach, consisting simply of large concrete pillars supporting a latticed roof and a ticket office on concrete slabs at the north end, suspended two stories above ground. White walls and arches that serve as decorations to the extension are more alike that of the Dayabumi complex than the original station. The new extension is connected to Dayabumi via an elevated walkway.
At least u could translate a little.. plz..

What were the early nineties like in America musically and pop culture wise?

Written by General Seo on Aug 24th, 2010 | Filed under: Link Popularity

I know that, if you were into rock and roll, Grunge (and to a lesser extend Groove metal) was king, Glam metal/rock, new wave and 80s pop were O-U-T, and that hip hop and electronic dance music (and a little later boy bands also) had just entered the mainstream as were considered the newest coolest things ever as well (being played in clubs and sports arenas and on MTV/VH1 and such) I know that the early nineties was also one of those times in history, (comparable to the mid seventies Disco craze) when people briefly thought artists like Vanilla Ice, Kriss Kross, and Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch were actually cool. I’m also aware that sometimes you would hear about Norwegian Black metal in the news because it was linked to church burnings and murders in Norway and that death metal was slowly gaining popularity. But what am I missing? I was born in nineteen ninety so I was not old enough to remember anything and my parents weren’t into the music or pop culture of the early nineties much. Any insight into this time period from someone who was there and into the scene would be greatly appreciated (Also, please correct me if any of my listed conceptions of the time period are wrong).

From Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder?

1. Is it possible to enjoy life’s simpler pleasures while simultaneously pursuing the answer to life’s great mysteries?
2. The rationalists believed that the basis of all human knowledge lay in the mind while the empiricists believed that our knowledge of the world proceeded from the sense. Are you a rationalist or an empiricist? Can a philosopher be a bit of both?
3. The existence of God is perhaps the most profound issue philosophers must address. Descartes believed that the concept of a perfect entity could only have orginated from such an entity, rather than an imperfect entity such as a human being. This is how he arrives at proving the existence of God. We learn in Sophie’s lesson Descartes that this leap is considered the weak spot in Descartes’ philosophy. Do you agree or disagree with this evaluation?
4. Was Marx a Marxist? Was Jesus a Christian? More to the point, do you believe that as ideologies are widely adopted they somehow become perverted? if so, why?
5. While discussing Marx’s theory of alienation in the workplace, Sophie and Albert discuss Sophie’s aunt who hates her job at a candy factory. Albert states that since Sophie;s aunt doesn’t like her job, she must not like herself. Do you think that self worth is so closely linked with work?
6. What did Sartre mean when he said, "man is condemned to be free" Do you agree?
7.It should come as no surprise that existentialism gained popularity after the WWII. What are your thoughts on existentialism? Is it a cop out of sorts or is it a realistic articulation of the modern human condition?
8. Which theory has had the most profound impact on the way human beings thinks and live in the 21st century: Darwin’s theory of evolution or Freud’s theory of the unconscious?

Local TV carrier of SURVIVOR:HEROES vs VILLAINS in the Philippines?

Written by General Seo on Aug 23rd, 2010 | Filed under: Link Popularity

I used to enjoy Survivor Seasons on Studio 23 (a local cable channel of ABS CBN) until the word that GMA 7 acquired the franchise for Survivor Philippines.Hearing about this,Studio 23 dropped Survivor from its line up of shows coz ABS CBN didn’ t want to promote any shows that linked to GMA.

I was so disappointed and aghast with GMA Network for failing to air SURVIVOR SAMOA on its cable tv QTV to all its Filipino fans.RPN 9 aired it but very disappointing coz few Filipino fans were aware of it as RPN failed to pumped up its promotion.

Until now,I’m still having a hard time searching which channel here in the Philippines will carry the much anticipated SURVIVOR 20:HEROES vs VILLAINS.

Survivor US will always be a spectacular and very influential reality tv show on Earth.GMA tried to duplicate its popularity in the Philippines with the local franchise but came up short.

How optical illusions work?

Written by General Seo on Aug 20th, 2010 | Filed under: Link Popularity

I’m doing a science project on optical illusions and my teacher said i needed a lot of research on the subject. can you please give me links to websites that will help!! Thanks!!

If this helps this is what i have so far:
Research:
Optical illusions:
People used to think their eyes were playing tricks on them. Epicharmus thought our senses were messing up from lack of attention while Protagorous thought that what was messing us up was our environment. Aristotle, who lived 100 years later, thought that our senses can be easily fooled. Fifty years later Plato said that the mind and eyes have to work together (which is what we currently think). In 1854, JJ Opel published a paper on line illusions. They got very popular but in 1912 their popularity dropped dramatically.
Your eyes:
Most of what you see every day is actually not there. It’s “made up” by your brain to fill in the extra information after your eyes discard a lot of what they see. The eye is a circular structure about an inch across with a clear bulge on the front called the cornea. Past the cornea, there are three layers on the wall of the eye. The sclera, the outermost layer, is a strong, protective coating. It covers the outer surface of the eye, which connects to the clear cornea in the front of the eye. The choroid, the middle layer of the eye, is a vascular layer that’s always with a ciliary body and the iris on the front side of the eye. The retha is a light-sensitive tissue which lines the back wall of the eye. Although the human eye is more complex, it’s helpful to think of a camera because the basics are similar.

Images given to the brain from the eyes help interpret what you see and what is being seen. On occasion this malfunctions, but most of the time this helps us with depth perception. The cues from the eyes, given to the brain make us think that something is true, or sometimes isn’t even there. This makes lines that are the same look different, or make pictures appear to be moving when they’re stationary. A lot of our everyday vision is an illusion. Most illusions are ‘physical illusions’. They are cause by effects on the light as it moves from what we’re looking at to our eyes. These illusions we are not fooled by because our minds have been modified to understand these effects, and we learned to make up for them in ways that make sense with reality.
Some examples of optical illusions include, things that are further away appear smaller than the same object at a closer range. Mirages and mirrors showing things where they’re not are also examples. The sun rise and sun set appear to be redder then they are. Fish in ponds look higher up in the water than they really are. Parallel lines seem to come together on the horizon, when its apparent they don’t and lenses change the obvious size and distance of things too.

Maynooth College question?

Written by General Seo on Aug 20th, 2010 | Filed under: Link Popularity

I’ve been on the M.C. website and was wondering if someone could confirm or correct this for me: The ‘Law and Arts’ degree is in the Faculty of Social Science and was 475 points in 2008 and for the first year is combined with two other subjects and for the final year one other; however you cannot combine some subjects with Law, biology for example. Irish however was 355 points in 2008 and is compatable with Law. My question is- could I apply for the Irish/Nua-Ghaeilge course and combine it with Law even though Law is 120 points more and I’d be attending classes with people who 120 points more than me? I know the points system is based on popularity of the course but that still sems to good to be true for me, and unfair to the people who got 475 or over (I expect to get around 440 points)?

Also when I look at the details of one particular degree most of them seem to require combining with ‘two other subjects for the first year, and one other for the second and third years’ (sorry I still dunno how to do links) and there’s a long list of subjects at the side- are any of them available for combining with Law or Irish as long as they’re not the subjects specifically not available for combination with Law or Irish?

And finally, if Law or Irish in Maynooth were to suddenly become very popular next year there’s nothing that would stop the points for either course soaring above 500, is there :( ?
