BEWARE! New Yahoo Email Scam?

Written by General Seo on May 23rd, 2011 | Filed under: Duplicate Content

This Scam is unique because it does not occur via the INBOX — Instead, it occurs AFTER you sign in with your user name and password, BUT BEFORE you’re taken to your INBOX. Instead of being taken to your INBOX, you’re taken to a page asking you to copy all your user info over to a server in India.

Here’s how the scam works.

AFTER signing in to www.yahoo.com with your username and password, you are
taken to a page with an india.yahoo.com address asking you to copy your Yahoo user
information and data to a server in India in order to "Improve Performance".

You only have two choices: Yes or No.

But if you choose "No" – you’re told the site may not perform optimally if you select "No"

I inquired with Yahoo Help, and forwarded them the exact link and page impression, and they replied with a generic response stating: your inquiry is "best addressed by our Account Verification team……..contact them directly to provide the necessary info to resolve your issue."

Of course, I CANNOT follow their instructions because when I attempt to do so, I’m again taken to the page: "copy your info to a server in India."

Here is a copy & paste of the page contents. This is the page I’m taken to AFTER signing in to www.yahoo.com with my user name and password.

If anyone knows about this – especially if you work for Yahoo and can at least verify that someone there is aware it’s happening…..please post a response. Thanks.

  1. I just spoke with yahoo customer care and then said it is not scam just an issue with their servers…click no on the prompt..log out an log back in again

  2. Thanks for the heads up.

  3. (I’m resubmitting my answer here, as I did on another answers.Yahoo for everyone to see) …

I JUST got this message tonight, on BOTH my yahoo accounts! Scary, since I already had logged in with password. So I contacted yahoo’s "livechat". Got "Dirk" who said, "send a screen shot", which I did. Dirk then states, "Look suspicious. Just don’t answer it". WHAT !!!!!!!! How can a true Yahoo! livechat guy not know if its real or not and then give such a lame answer. This made me more nervous. So I logged right out. Took 7 attempts to be able to re-log in as it stated "invalid username or password". I finally got in, changed my password, BUT ………. have I already been hacked? Why did it take 7 attempts to re-log in? !!!!!!!!!

  4. To everyone who is trying to avoid clicking on the "Account Info" screen: You should be able to bypass it simply by opening up a second mail window in your browser; that will take you directly to your inbox.

I couldn’t find anywhere to actually send a message to Yahoo customer service; this issue doesn’t fit any of the pre-selected choices in the drop-down menus. I may try the chat if I can find it.

  5. SOLUTION: Just got off of the phone with Yahoo customer service. There is a work-around just reported for this problem. I have had this same issue since last night on all of my Yahoo email addresses. Also, when trying to access them from a computer that I fired up for the first time in two months. It went directly to edit.india.yahoo.com… in the URL in question. So, the work-around worked perfectly.

Sign out of Yahoo…go to http://pulse.yahoo.com, click the Sign-in link at the top of this page and then sign in. When you arrive on the new page, click on the Mail link at the top of that page and you should be in now. (You may have to back out after signing in, if the same "edit.india.yahoo" page displays again …then go directly to pulse.yahoo.com and on to the Mail link) This route takes you inside to access your email from a different server direction. If you have been blocked from accessing your Yahoo email this should provide a temporary solution and get you in. Yahoo said they are working on identifying the problem. This will work for you meanwhile.

  6. This happened to me too. Three days ago.

I tried to report it on yahoo but they are not responding.

Is this only occurring in California? This didn’t happen with some people from other states.
